ASX listed Far and its partners discovered in FAN South-1 well a quality hydrocarbon bearing reservoir in the lower Cretaceous in the Sangomar Deep Offshore Block, Senegal.

Preliminary analysis on oil samples “indicates 31° API oil quality”, the junior exploration company said, as announcing the discovery on 11 July, adding

FAN South-1 is located in 2,175 m water depth, about 90 km offshore in the Sangomar Deep Offshore block and 30 km south west of the FAN-1 exploration well.

It is the tenth well to be drilled offshore Senegal and the fourth in the current drilling campaign on the three blocks offshore Sangomar Deep, Sangomar Offshore and Rufisque.

The discovery of oil in FAN South-1 yet again verifies the quality of the oil and gas generating system in our offshore Senegal permits and is another significant result”, FAR’s Managing Director Cath Norman commented.

FAN South-1 was targeting a best estimate, prospective resource of 134 mmbbls oil with an 18% chance of success.

It reached the total depth of 5,343m, as targeting an Upper Cretaceous stacked multi-layer channelised turbidite fan prospect and a Lower Cretaceous base of slope turbidite fan prospect.

The rig will now move to the SNE North-1 location to drill into the Sirius Prospect. Sirius has been independently assessed to contain 294 mmbbls oil on a prospective, recoverable, best estimate, gross basis and carry a 60% chance of geological success.

As planning for the phased development of the SNE field moves ahead, we will shortly commence operations on the SNE North prospect which has the potential to enhance our total resources in Senegal.” Simon Thomson, CEO of Cairn Energy PLC said.

The SNE is expected to host contingent resource with gross oil in place of more than 2.7 billion barrels.

Cairn Energy is the operator of the three blocks offshore with 40% working Interest in the joint venture encompassing Woodside 35%, FAR Ltd (15%) and the national oil company of Senegal PETROSEN 10%.
